Iceland: Entry 1

29 July 2002: An airport, somewhere...

Words from an airport

OK, so the first leg of the trip is over, and it was great! I'm not going to write much now because I'm using an airport internet terminal with the worst keyboard I've ever seen - the bottom row of keys is displaced one key to the right!

So here's a quick list of what I did: whale watching from Húsavík, then a walk up the Jökulsá a Fjöllum gorge to Europe's largest waterfall Dettifoss, then to Mývatn (midge lake) and lots of interestibg volcsnic features like boiling mud pots. Then on to Askja, a volcanic caldera where I swam in a hot lake. Next to the East fjords where I found the most idylic hostel to stay in and sone "Scotish" mountains to climb. Next to Scaftafell, on the edge of the Vatnajökull ice cap, where the glaciers almost reach the sea. And finally up to Landmannalaugar and Mount Hekla, a volcanic landscape with more hot springs to swim in.

So now, after a final whistlestop tour to Geysir and Gullfoss with Eileen Karlsson yesterday (thanks for everything Eileen!) I'm on my way to Canada. More news, and eventually some photos, soon. Keep in touch everyone!
